For Home Economics we use a very wide variety of materials and try, above all, to keep it fun! I want my kids growing up loving and longing for a peaceful, orderly hearth and home. Below are just a few of our favorites:
- For the girls (and myself), I find the "Homestead Blessings" absolutely inspiring. After watching the
first set, I knew we would enjoy the second. The West ladies are so simple and pleasant to watch without being even the tiniest bit preachy. They truly make one want to jump up off the couch, put on a pretty apron and get out into the garden or the kitchen.
- Another video we enjoy is Making Herbs Simple. This is a great, fun introduction to the world of medicinal herbs. We grow and use quite a few herbs around here (both for cosmetic and medicinal purposes), and even though this video is not perfect, it is a great way to introduce the world of herbs to kids as well as adults.
- Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House
is a great resource.
- Though we have many cookbooks on our shelves, the two I find most useful for kids who are just learning to cook are Cooking with Children
and The Fannie Farmer Junior Cookbook
.
- A fun cooking "extra" is the the Cooking game for the Nintendo DS
. It goes step by small step through each recipe (or it skips the small steps, if you are more advanced) and teaches many necessary skills in a fun format.
- We also use Tea & Cake and Sewing with St. Anne, and after repeated requests from Caleb, Collin and Noah I am working on a very little something for my boys to learn a few basic home economic type skills with.
