...Because I just had to share this picture I just took. This may seem terribly silly to most of you, but we had
our very first baby chick hatch today!
You see, we finally have a nice rooster in our little flock, but when one of our chickens went
broody a while back (she is very young) we just assumed that she
wouldn't stay on the nest for the full 21 days (we have had no luck in
the past). So we only let the poor thing keep 2 eggs. Our main reason for being so stingy is that we only have 6 hens left (after the coyotes
feasted last winter) so we really didn't want to "waste" any of the few
eggs we were still getting.
Well, today is day 21 and Anna and I went out to check the nest about mid-morning.
We were squealing like silly school girls when we saw this fluffy little
chick! The second egg was starting to crack this afternoon, so we have high hopes. You can bet that next time this little lady decides to set, she will get a lot more than 2 eggs. :)
*** UPDATE ***
Chick number 2 has hatched! You can see a pic over on Flickr. This is entirely too much fun.
