We try to keep special occasions fairly simple (doable) around here, so that they stand a good chance of actually happening. For instance, birthdays are always low-key and family only (extended family included) with a homemade cake decorated by the child and / or siblings. Each kid's "baptism day" (the anniversary of the day they were baptized) is noted with one very small gift (we are talking homemade or under $5 bucks here) from Chip and I along with everyone recalling the events of that special day.
On the occasion of a child's "feast day" (or "name day", if you prefer), that particular child gets to choose a dessert for the day (Desserts are not a real regular thing around here.). We recently celebrated 3 1/2 year old Marie's feast day (August 23, St. Rose of Lima... so now you know her first name. :-)), and she chose ice cream cones for her dessert. "Pink" ice cream "in a cone", to be exact.
Since it was a "feast", everyone had two and she ventured to try the cookies-n-cream in her next cone. As you can see, the drips started to get ahead of her as her belly filled up.
Alas, two whole ice cream cones proved a bit much for this almost 4 year old little lady, and the remains of the second were put in the freezer while Miss Marie was cleaned up and put in the bed for a much needed nap.
