So many times I am out an about running errands etc and I realize it is time to eat something. (Pregnancy kicks my mild hypoglycemia into overdrive, so many small meals throughout the day are a necessity.) Fast food does not sit well with my stomach or my wallet, so I usually pack a little something from home or pick up some nice cheese, crackers and fruit (I always take along a water bottle.). I cannot count the number of times that I have wished for a real fork or knife while eating in the car, and this little picnic wrap is my solution to that problem.
I simply started with two pieces of 20" x 9" fabrics (Some recycled linen and a 1930's reprint fabric.) and stitched them right sides together (1/4" seam allowance) leaving a small hole (about 2 1/2" long) about halfway down the long side for turning. After turning and pressing, I folded up the bottom 4 1/2" for the pocket and top stitched around the whole thing while inserting an 8" piece of elastic (folded in half) into the turning opening.
After that I simply stitched up the pocket a few times to make smaller pockets for the utensils and small napkin, sewed a button onto the fabric right above where the elastic was sewn in, and added some of the vintage silverware from my thrift store stash. (When empty, the whole thing makes a great placemat or crumb-catcher for your lap.) The little bit of elastic wraps around to neatly fasten the whole thing. Perfect for a thrifty picnic!
Now I have a question for any of you who would care to answer. I am pondering having a few postcards printed up to offer either here or on Etsy, and I cannot decide which way to make them. Either completely blank on the backside for note writing and include an envelope for mailing, or have the traditional divided line along with address area on the back so that they can simply be mailed as is. So which would YOU prefer if you had the choice? The envelope version with the blank back? Or the traditional postcard (cheaper to mail, also.)? I would love to hear some opinions!
Have a blessed day!
