What I Like About Weeding
Now I will admit that weeding is probably not at the top of my list of favorite garden chores, but as I cleaned up the herb garden a bit this weekend, I began to see the good in it.
- I like the way I am on the same level as the plants and the birds forget I'm there and perch right on the picket fence close by.
- I like getting to use my very favorite of all my gardening tools. Amazingly useful.
- I like nibbling the tiny lavender vetch flowers. Technically a weed, but it is also a legume and so helpful to getting nitrogen into the soil, so it gets to stay for a while longer.
- I like the feeling of accomplishment when I get a huge hunk of a weed out with all of its roots attached.
- I like seeing the fat worms wriggling in the root ball of that same weed.
- I love the little toad that I unearthed when I removed his weedy roof. A prince indeed, do you see him? He later hopped out into the sunshine and amongst the plants. Perhaps he will take up residence in the little broken pot "toad house" the children have provided for him.
- But my favorite thing about weeding is the peace. I can actually hear my own thoughts. Because after all, who wants to help with weeding? :-)
