A Book Review

Astar

Not long ago, Carrie Gellin of Sourcebooks, Inc asked me if I would review the newest book in JoAnn Dawson's Lucky Foot Stable Series.  They day we received A Star Discovered (along with the first two books in the series), they were immediately snatched up and devoured by our 10 year old horse nut, Amelia.

Carrie Gellin writes:

"The winner of three “Book of the Year” National Awards, writer JoAnn Dawson tells the tales of epic friends, Mary and Jody and their talented ponies, Lady and Gypsy. This series would be wonderful to share with your family because it emphasizes the importance of a healthy active lifestyle, imagination and a connection to nature. A delightful and engaging series, Lucky Foot Stables will have young readers wanting to play outside and create their own adventures!"

Truly, these books reminded me very much of all the Marguerite Henry books that I loved so much as a child.  (Yes, I was a horse fan too.) Amelia really enjoyed the Lucky Foot series, so I decided to post her review (Though it is more like a book report.) of the third book, A Star Discovered.  :-)

A Book Review  ~  By Amelia Cantrell

"The Lucky Foot Stable series is about two best friends, Mary and Jodi who are both horse crazy.  They have two horses, Lady White Cloud who belongs to Jodi and Gypsy Amber who belongs to Mary.  They keep them at Luck Foot Stable on Mr. McMurry dairy farm.

In the third book in the series, A Star Discovered, Lady's colt Star goes to a yearling show and wins first and third prizes.  But when they get back to the farm after the show, Willy the cow-hand has bad news for them.  The owner of Star's father, a black stallion, wasn't happy that Star's mother Lady had been bred to his stallion without him knowing it.  (Lady had gone to a show in book one and broken loose and run off with the stallion.)  The owner of Star's sire, wanted either Star or the breeding fees, which were more than $2,000.  At that time, the Luck Foot Stable gang did not have even close to enough money and they were scared they might loose their Star.

Shortly after this, a movie scout came to look over the dairy farm to use it in a movie. But, Mr. McMurry wasn't home at the time so the scout discussed it with Willy and decided to have Willy and the girls in the movie.  Mary and Jodi thought that if they earned enough money they might save Star, but Willy told them that they would earn some money in the movie, but not enough.  In the end, Willy saves the day by letting them have his share of the movie money.

The girls have many more adventures while they are trying to save Star, but you will have to read the book to find out about them! :-) What I like best about this series is that it's about two girls who are horse lovers (just like me) and by working together they solve their problems and have fun.  I would recommend this book to any girls from ages 8 to 12 who like horses."
