We recently found one of the most amazing web sites I have ever seen. It is called The Wee Garden and it is a virtual feast for the eyes.
Last year, we enjoyed creating a small garden following the directions in Linnea's Almanac. (A terrific book, by the way.) The kids made a path with small stones, on top of soil placed in a shallow pan, and planted various kinds of seeds in different sections of the "garden". It was great, and they learned a lot, but eventually it had to go because the seedlings were growing large and tangly.
Everyone around here likes miniatures of one sort or another. The boys are partial to mini weapons (tiny swords & shields) and vehicles while the girls love all things doll-house. Miniature gardening looks like something we all can get into!
This year, we will do things the wee garden way! The Wee Garden website gives a list of the various types of plants that stay small (or grow very slowly) and work well for "gardening in miniature". The diminutive book; however, gives suggestions on where to use each particular plant and even tips for creating miniature trees! We are already beginning to collect small items and keep our eyes open for anything tiny and garden-ish. We found the little clay pot below in the garden center of Wal-Mart for only $.38!
I couldn't help ordering a copy of The Wee Garden book (which is 90% beautiful, inspiring photos) and a couple of wee goodies. I have them all perched on my kitchen windowsill anxiously awaiting warmer weather.
(***A special "Thank You" to Jill Schoenfeld of Wee Garden for permission to use the three amazing photos you see above.)
